Is there a reason that the newer fintech banks tend towards mastercard debit whilst the high street banks are usually visa debit cards? Are there any advantages to one or the other?

Sometimes card acceptance favours one over the other, depending on which parts of the globe you travel. Typically however, both card schemes are accepted where one is.
MasterCard generally have an ever-so-slightly better exchange rate for foreign transactions.
I have had two occasions where I could only use my visa as mastercard wasn’t accepted, an ATM at a convenience store in Hualien, Taiwan and Costco in the US.
Has anyone been in a situation where visa wasn’t accepted but mastercard was? Apparently mastercard is accepted in more countries which is a surprise to me.
